The method involves laying an electrical axle module (2) for installation along longitudinal direction (L) of a motor vehicle. The axle module is modified such that an electric machine (8) of the axle module is arranged parallel to a drive axle (3) of the vehicle. The electric machine is operatively connected with the drive axle by a gear set e.g. pinion and spur gear. The drive axle of the vehicle is supported at a housing (7) of the axle module. The pinion is provided to be in frictional operative engagement with the spur gear that is mounted at a differential part (4) of the drive axle. An independent claim is also included for a drive system for a motor vehicle.
