<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for controlling the volume of: a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine; air in a cylinder; or the air-fuel mixture of air with non-combusted fuel. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus has: an inlet-outlet port (9) connected to the supply source of air or air-fuel mixture and having opened and closed states; and the combustion chamber (7) having a reduced volume. The inlet-outlet port (9) is controlled: when opened, to permit air or air-fuel mixture to enter or enter and exit the combustion chamber (7) and cylinder (3); and when closed, to prevent air or air-fuel mixture from entering or exiting the combustion chamber (7) and cylinder (3). The volume of air or air-fuel mixture, located inside the combustion chamber (7) and cylinder (3) when the inlet-outlet port (9) is closed, is less than the volume of the combustion chamber (7) and cylinder (3) defined when the inlet-outlet port (9) is closed and when a piston (1) is at the bottom dead center position inside the cylinder (3). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
