The charging device (1) has a charging unit (2) for charging the battery, and alternating current inputs (L1,N) of the charging unit, by which the charging unit is connected to an outside of the motor vehicle located alternating current mains (AC). The diagnostic elements (100,200) are provided for checking a functionality of the charging unit. The diagnostic elements are adapted for checking the operability of the charging unit.
