The method involves locking a load (10) in a locking position (20) while handling the load such that locking force is generated by the own mass of the load. A mechanical locking element (22) is provided to act with respect to the load when the load is transferred to the locking position. The locking movement when introducing the load into the locking position is attenuated by a damper (25). An independent claim is included for device for handling loads.
