PURPOSE: A method for introducing apoptosis by an anticancer agent or gamma rays is provided to effectively suppress cancer cell growth and to enhance anticancer efficiency. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating cancer contains smooth muscle-22 alpha(SM22alpha) protein or a vector containing a polynucleotide encoding the protein. The protein has an amino acid sequence of sequence number 1. The vector is pcDNA3.1. A pharmaceutical composition for enhancing anticancer effect contains the SM22alpha protein or the vector. A method for promoting cell aging comprises a step of treating the SM22alpha proteins or vector together with an anticancer agent to cells or tissues. The anticancer agent is doxorubicin.
