<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact optical modulator which is significantly improved in characteristic impedance, electrical cross-talk, and a light modulation band. <P>SOLUTION: In an optical modulator comprising a substrate 1, an optical waveguide 3 formed on the substrate, and a traveling wave electrode which comprises center electrodes 4a' to 4d' for applying a voltage and grounding electrodes 5a' to 5e'. The optical waveguide includes a plurality of interaction optical waveguides 3a to 3d in an interaction part which is a region where the refractive index is changed by applying a voltage to the traveling wave electrode. The plurality of center electrodes and grounding electrodes are provided respectively and the electrode of an input side feed part connected to the traveling wave electrode of the interaction part comprises a plurality of the center electrodes and grounding electrodes respectively. The optical modulator is configured such that at least two adjacent ones of the equivalent refractive indices of a plurality of high frequency electric signals for propagating through a plurality of the center electrodes and grounding electrodes of the input side feed part are different from each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
