The portable data carrier (10) has a deformable data carrier main portion (12), a discrimination unit (25) and a strain gage (30) which are integrated in the data carrier main portion. The strain gage measures the deformation of data carrier main portion so as to verify an authentication characteristic of the data carrier by using the discrimination unit. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) card reader; (2) method for personalization of portable data carrier; and (3) method for authentication of portable data carrier.
