A process for the production of extra low carbon stainless steel comprises simultaneously introducing into a ladle a solid crushed reductant alloy of iron and silicon (e.g. Fe-Si containing 45-75% Si) and a molten basic iron ore slag, reladling the contents of the ladle, removing the slag and then adding any necessary alloying ingredients to make the stainless steel. The alloying additions may be made in any or all of the following ways: (a) suitable oxides or other compounds may be included in the slag for reduction; (b) they may be included in the reductant alloy; (c) they may be added to the ladle reaction mixture in the solid or molten state; (d) they may be added to the remelted cast product. |
