The engine has a cylinder (2) in communication with an active chamber cylinder (13). During stopping of the main operating piston (1) at its top dead center, compressed air is admitted into an expansion chamber when the latter is at its lowest volume, pushes a load piston (14) and produces work. With the expansion chamber maintained at its maximum volume, the compressed air expands in the operating cylinder, pushing the operating piston (1) down and producing work. During ascent of the operating piston (14) the variable volume of the expansion chamber is returned to its smallest volume, to start a complete cycle. - The movement of the load piston is such that it ends its descending run and starts its ascending run in such a manner that both pistons (1, 14) reach their TDC at the same time. The air is reheated by energy in a thermal re-heater.
