A hollow cylindrical nuclear fuel element has a sheath comprising a cylindrical inner sheet and a cylindrical outer sheet, the inner sheet at least being so constructed that, under reactor conditions, it is deformed by the pressure of the cooling fluid into contact with the fuel. The deformation of the sheath may be either plastic or resilient. As shown, the inner sheet 8 comprises hollow fins 10, 11, 12 which allow an increase in diameter of the inner sheet under pressure. The sheath may be made of magnesium, aluminium, or thin stainless steel. |
