<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device having high output and long life. <P>SOLUTION: The light emitting device comprises a light source for emitting an excitation light; and a wavelength conversion member for absorbing at least part of the excitation light and emitting light of different wavelength. The wavelength conversion member comprises a columnar layer arranged at a position where the excitation light is directed initially; and at least of one cylindrical layer arranged on the outer periphery of the columnar layer.
