PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable prompt performance of the other motions of a liquid ejecting apparatus after the reading motion by a cartridge sensor while the number of cartridge sensors is reduced. SOLUTION: The liquid ejecting apparatus includes an opening and closing member 11 which opens and closes a cartridge insertion opening 10, and the cartridge sensor 35 which reads detection parts 90 furnished in respective liquid cartridges 80 of a plurality of kinds attached to a cartridge attachment part 25. The plurality of kinds of liquid cartridges 80 are configured so that the respectively furnished detection parts 90 may align linearly in an attachment state. The liquid ejecting apparatus has a scanning mechanism 40 which scans the cartridge sensor 35 in a direction to be sequentially opposed to the plurality of detection parts 90 in association with the motion of the opening and closing member 11. The cartridge sensor 35 reads the plurality of detection parts 90 in a sequence to oppose when scanned by the scanning mechanism 40 at the time of opening and closing of the cartridge insertion opening 10 by the opening and closing member 11.
