A high activity catalyst composition which can efficiently burn soot components accumulated on a diesel particulate filter system for a shorter time as compared with an existing soot combustion catalyst, and a device for reduction of soot and smoke, which effectively removes soot even in exhaust gas of a low temperature, and can effectively reduce particulate matters, are provided. A catalyst composition for a diesel particulate filter comprises a composite cocatalyst supported on a support comprising at least one selected from titania, silica, alumina, ceria, zirconia, zeolite and aluminosilicate, wherein the composite cocatalyst comprises (A) at least one platinum group catalytic component, (B) at least one of copper(Cu), molybdenum(Mo) and vanadium(V), and (C) at least one of cesium(Cs) and K(potassium). The composite cocatalyst is a three-way composite cocatalyst of copper, molybdenum and cesium. The platinum group catalytic component is selected from a Pt-based catalyst, a Pd-based catalyst, or a Rh-based catalyst. The platinum group catalytic component is derived from at least one Pt-based compound selected from H2PtCl6, H2PtCl4, (NH4)2PtCl6, (NH4)2PtCl4, K2PtCl6, K2PtCl4, (NH4)2Pt(CN)4, (NH4)2Pt(SCN)4, (NH4)2Pt(NO3)4, K2Pt(CN)4, K2Pt(SCN)4, K2Pt(NO3)4, Pt(NH3)2Cl4, Pt(NH3)2(NO3)4, and (R-NH3)2Pt(OH)6.
