摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS (in-plane switching) mode liquid crystal display device which has a simple construction and in which not only the display quality but also the viewing angle is remarkably improved. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a first polarizing film, first and second retardation areas, a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a second substrate, and a second polarizing film disposed in this order wherein liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are aligned in parallel to surfaces of the pair of substrates in black display time. In the liquid crystal display device, the in-plane retardation Re of the second retardation area is 100 nm or less, the retardation Rth thereof in the thickness direction is 50-200 nm, the first retardation area has negative anisotropy of the refractive index and an optic axis practically parallel to the layer surface, and the slow axis of the first retardation area is orthogonal to the transmission axis of the first polarizing film and the slow axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules in the black display time.
