Apparatus for the supply of electrical power comprises a first AC power line (8a) supplied by a first generator (4a) and a second AC power line (8b) supplied by a second generator (4b). A circuit (19) coupled between the first and second power lines (8a,8b) corrects the power factor of the lines using either a direct AC-AC converter (22) or back-to-back AC-DC converters (18a,18b). Back-to-back converters create a DC link (20) from which DC power can be supplied to a HVDC power line (32) or to windings (34a,34b) of the generators (4a,4b). Conversely, turbines (2a,2b) that drive the generators (4a,4b) can be started up by using power supplied on the DC link (20) and operating the AC-DC converters (18a,18b) in reverse to drive the generators (4a,4b) as motors.
