In apparatus for cooling milk or other perishable liquid contained in a tank 14, the lower part of the tank is immersed in a cooling liquid in a container 2, and the tank 14 and a cover 15, which are separated by a layer 16 of foam plastic material bonded to both the tank and the cover, form an integral assembly 3 which is removably secured to the container 2. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, anice bank type vacuum milk cooler comprises a rectangular base cabinet having an inner skin 8 and an outer skin 7 separated by a layer of foam plastic material 9 and forming a tank for a cooling liquid 43, e.g. water. The tank assembly 3 is removably attached to the cabinet 2 by bolts 25, and comprises a cylindrical milk tank 14 and the cabinet cover 15, the layer of foam plastic 16 being omitted round a manhole 19, Fig. 4, in the top of the tank assembly. A fibrous insulation 26 stable at welding temperatures is used round the manhole. A manhole cover 34 seats on a gasket 35 and carries a vacuum connection 36, a milk line connection 37, and a motor 30 driving a suspended milk stirrer 29. Wedge plates 41 forced down over pins 38 on the cover 15 clamp the manhole cover 34 in place to give an air-tight seal. The cooling liquid 43 is cooled by a refrigerant flowing through pipe coils 52 supported on frames 56 and straps 57 attached to the upper edges of the base cabinet 2, the ends 53 and 54 of the coil being lead out of the apparatus through a control panel on the end of the tank assembly. The cooling fluid 43 is circulated by a pump 48 which discharges it tangentially to the surface of tank 14 through openings in a pair of longitudinal tubes 44 attached to the lower part of the tank 14 and joined by a loop 45. Milk is withdrawn from the tank 14 through an outlet pipe 21. Thermostatic controls operate on the refrigerant compressor, not shown, to limit the thickness of ice on the coils 52, and on the stirrer motor 30 and the motor 49 for the pump 48 to limit the minimum temperature of the milk.</p> |
