A reciprocating piston 54 (Fig. 2, not shown) carrying a piercing tool 94 is supplied on one side with high pressure hydraulic fluid from a compressed air operated booster 16 (Fig. 1, not shown) supplied from an hydraulic fluid tank 14 which is also pressurized with compressed air, and the return stroke of the piston 54 is effected by hydraulic pressure supplied by a second compressed air operated booster 24 having a supply tank 22 under air pressure greater than that of tank 14; each tank 14, 22 being connected to the cylinder 40 through lines 116, 82 including fronted sleeves 136 housing spring- loaded piston valve members 130 which when seated connect the cylinder spaces to the tanks and when unseated by pressure from the boosters connect the latter to the cylinder spaces. The tool carries a sensing device which at the end of the working stroke shuts a compressed air supply valve 26 of booster 16 and opens a corresponding valve 28 of booster 24, a second sensing device initiates the subsequent working stroke. In a modification the working stroke booster is ram actuated. The return stroke of the piston 54 is assisted by a spring 78.</p> |
