The alkylation of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin is effected in the presence of a metal of Group IB on an amorphous, acidic, refractory oxide. Suitable catalyst supports are alumina-boria, silica with alumina, zirconia and/or titania, or magnesia which may be mixed with a molecular sieve alumino-silicate. There may be present 0.1-5% of halogen and 0.1-10% of metal incorporated by impregnation or ion-exchange. Alkylation is effected at 200-500 DEG C., a space velocity of 0.1-10 kg. of olefin per kg. of catalyst per hour, and 6.8-102 atmospheres with an aromatic to olefin mol ratio of 2-10 : 1 and preferably in the presence of 1-50 mols of hydrogen per mol of hydrocarbon. |
