[Also in Division F2] A reinforced non-metallic bellows 4, which may be used as a fluid seal between relatively movable parts or to form an expansion joint in non-metallic pipework, is made by forming a tubular body of substantially uniform wall thickness containing reinforcing material in restricted regions adjacent its inner and/or outer surface and machining away or cutting the body to leave a bellows whose pleats contain reinforcing material at their inner and/or outer tips only. A cylindrical body of P.T.F.E. with inner and outer diameters indicated at 1 and 2 respectively is mounted on a core pin (not shown) and wrapped with several layers of glass fibre fabric impregnated with P.T.F.E. so that its outer diameter is increased to 3. The assembly is then subjected to a moulding process and the resulting block machined to form the bellows shown with the outer tip of each convolution reinforced with glass cloth. When the bellows is to be used as part of a mechanical seal the original body may incorporate glass or metal powder as a filler adjacent its ends. In the seal in Fig. 2 (not shown), a bellows 6 made in accordance with the invention has a seal member 8 formed integrally therewith which is reinforced with glass fibre throughout its radial thickness and urged into contact with a stationary seat 9 by a helical spring 10. The bellows is surrounded by a metal sleeve 12 which may normally be omitted. In a modification, the member 8 is replaced by a separate carbon ring. |
