PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus and a controlling method are provided to control power supply of an installing unit according to an on/off operation of a relay unit. CONSTITUTION: A first protecting unit(220) compares a sensing result of a temperature sensing unit with a proper standard value. The first protecting unit outputs a comparison result. A switching unit(230) switches power which is supplied to an installing unit according to a signal level which is outputted from the first protecting unit. A second protecting unit(240) compares the sensing result of the temperature sensing unit with a proper criterion value. The second protecting unit outputs the comparison result.
