CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for treating insomnia contains Cirsium japonicum extract as an active ingredient. The extract is crude extract or non-polar solvent soluble extract. The pharmaceutical composition for treating insomnia contains apigenin of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. Apigenin is isolated from Cirsium japonicum and induces deep sleep through interaction of GABA receptors and a GABAergic system. A health functional food for treating insomnia contains Cirsium japonicum extract or apigenin as an active ingredient. The health food is manufactured in the form of powder, granule, tablet, capsule, or beverage.
