Contrary to the classic reciprocating engine, in a free-piston internal combustion engine according to the invention the combustion chamber (3) does not act directly on the crank piston (2), but on an interposed free piston (1)/gas spring (4) system. As a result, the volumetric work of the combustion gas is converted extremely quickly into kinetic energy of the free pistons shortly after ignition and transmitted to the crank pistons with delay and smoothed. During each power cycle, a non-positive locking apparatus (6) associates a discontinuous power cycle of the free pistons (1) to the continuous movement of the crank pistons (2), which results both in a stable free piston trajectory and in reduced heat transfer to the surrounding walls. The free-piston engine is particularly suited for use in power-generating heaters (micro-CHP) and in hybrid and electric vehicles. |
