<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that carries out operation while temporarily reducing the amount of operation sound so as not to give discomfort to a user. <P>SOLUTION: When a silent button is pressed, an image forming apparatus switches to a silent mode. In the silent mode, the image forming apparatus stops or reduces the rotation speed of a motor, reduces the rotation speed of a fan, or reduces the conveyance speed of sheets so as to reduce the amount of operation sound. When the silent button is pressed again, the silent mode is released.
