[Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A method of securing an electrically conductive wire 23, Fig. 6 (not shown), to an insulating supporting substrate 14 having a surface which cannot be wetted by molten material of the wire comprises inserting the wire through an aperture in the substrate, and heating an end of the wire projecting through the aperture to melt the end and thereby form a spherical mass integral with the wire and having a diameter greater than that of the wire. A tool or a deformation on the wire, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), may locate the wire in relation to the substrate while a heating flame is played on the projected end to form the spherical mass. An electrical connection may be formed between opposed conductors 16, 17, Fig. 5 (not shown), by a third conductor 18 formed with a spherical mass 19, 20 at each end, the masses also functioning to space the plates 13-15. Two wires 27, 28, Fig. 8 (not shown), in the plate 29 may be connected by a U-shaped connector 30 in another plate 31. A stack of miniature circuit modules, Figs. 11-14 (not shown), may be provided with spherical masses 43 at the ends of wires projecting through supporting frames 40. These masses contact similar masses 44 connected to printed circuit boards 41. Spherical contact protuberances extending from vertical apertures 46 (Fig. 14) in the frames act as spacers for the frames. If a permanent connection is desired, a coating of solder is applied to the protuberances which may be reheated in an oven or by the passage through the protuberances of an electric current to solder the connection. Alternatively, a welded joint may be formed between a copper protuberance and one of a different metal. The height of a protuberance may be reduced by lapping if frame spacings of close tolerance are required. Protuberances may be formed on a movable circuit panel for co-operation with a fixed panel, as in a locking mechanism or a multiple switch. |
