<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic device and an input/output method capable of efficiently using an already provided input/output function when an external input/output device is connected to the electronic device. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic device 1 having hardware with input/output functions includes: a detection unit 11 for, when an external input/output device 2 is connected to the electronic device, detecting an input/output function of the external input/output device 2; and a switching unit 13 for switching the input/output functions of the hardware on the basis of the input/output function of the external input/output device 2 detected by the detection unit 11. The switching unit 13 includes: a pre-switching specification unit 14 for specifying an input/output function to be switched among the input/output functions of the hardware; and a post-switching specification unit 15 for specifying an input/output function other than the input/output function specified by the pre-switching specification unit 14 among the input/output functions of the hardware.
