User permissions for multiple disparate physical devices and systems are stored in a unified permissions database connected to a network in common with the physical devices. The permissions database also stores user permissions for logical assets on or attached to the network. Physical devices may be connected to the network via bridges that convert messages from traditional protocols into the suite of internet protocols, without necessarily having prior knowledge of the length of the messages.
