<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for processing blood that facilitates implementation and reduces the need for human intervention, especially the apparatus for collecting red blood cells (RBC). <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a disposable set having an inlet port, an RBC container, a centrifuge rotor having a variable total volume, and a WBC filter, along with a tube connecting the port, the container, the rotor and the WBC filter. The filter is located between the inlet port and the rotor, and filters white blood cells (WBC) from blood before the blood enters the rotor. The whole blood is directed by the flow-control arrangement from the inlet through the filter to the rotor. The control unit's flow-control arrangement includes a pump, etc., for applying positive and negative pressure to the rotor's elastic diaphragm. First, plasma is sent out from the rotor while the rotor is being rotated and returned to a blood donor.
