PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system for an ultrashort focus image projection device.

SOLUTION: An embodiment of the invention provides a projection optical system that includes a first optical system for varying magnification of an image formed by an image display element and forming a first intermediate image, a second optical system for enlarging the first intermediate image and forming a second intermediate image, and a concave mirror for reflecting light forming the second intermediate image, and in which an optical axis of the first optical system makes parallel displacement in a direction vertical to the optical axis of the first optical system with respect to an optical axis of the second optical system.
