<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide deterministic serial connection small computer system interface (SAS) discovery and a method for environment setting. <P>SOLUTION: A serial management protocol (SMP) discovery request is transmitted from a node of an SAS domain to respective expanders of the SAS domain (402), and the node receives SMP discovery responses from the respective expanders of the SAS domain (404). A broadcast (change) received (BCR) count included in each received SMP discovery response is compared (406) with a stored BCR count recorded by the node before the SMP discovery request is transmitted, and the stored BCR count is updated based upon the received BCR count (408).
