<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a higher yield of ergothioneine by improving a method for culturing Pleurotus cornucopiae var. citrinopileatus with a high capacity to produce ergothioneine. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing ergothioneine includes culturing mycelia of Pleurotus cornucopiae var. citrinopileatus and extracting ergothioneine from the cultured mycelia. The culture is carried out in a culture medium containing methionine. Preferably, the culture medium further contains cysteine and/or histidine.
