<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft seal device of a rotary electric machine which seals a cooling medium in the machine even if a casing of a seal ring is displaced by increasing an internal pressure of the machine. <P>SOLUTION: A shaft seal device 10 according to an embodiment comprises: a machine internal seal ring 11; a machine external seal ring 12; a casing 13; and a center spring 14. The machine internal seal ring 11 is attached to a shaft 2 so as to form a first clearance C1 and has an inward rim 111 at an outer peripheral part. The machine external seal ring 12 is attached to the shaft 2 so as to form a second clearance C2 and has an outward rim 121 at an outer peripheral part. The casing 13 encloses outer peripheries of the inward rim 111 and the outward rim 121. The casing 13 makes line contacts with at least the machine external seal ring 12.
