<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the problems seen in the prior art relating to the character input using a touch screen that a wide information display area can be obtained by displaying column button at first and then gradually performing the character input though other buttons such as "phone button" or the like in the case of a mobile phone is also displayed on the touch screen and that the display region of those buttons are not effectively used as the information display for the character input. <P>SOLUTION: In order to solve the problems, according to the invention, there is provided a character input device in which buttons for selecting character sets such as "A and KA columns" or "SA and TA columns" and other buttons (buttons for non-characters) are displayed on a touch screen.
