<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing nonanimal-origin cholesterol, and to provide organisms of the Fungi kingdom, producing the cholesterol. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a genetically modified fungus independently producing cholesterol from a simple carbon source. The cholesterol can be produced by cultivating the organism. After the cultivation step, a mechanical crushing and saponification step of the cell is performed and preferably the cholesterol is extracted by using a water-immiscible solvent. The cholesterol, one of the metabolic intermediates thereof or a mixture of the sterol, labeled by<SP POS="POST">13</SP>C or<SP POS="POST">14</SP>C, is produced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
