The invention relates to a method for treating oily wastwater comprising: pretreating the oily wastewater (2) using at least one of electrocoagulation, flotation and absorbing (1) to produce a pretreated water (3); and treating the pretreated water (3) using membrane distillation (5) to produce a product water (6). In another aspect, the invention relates to a system for treating oily wastewater comprising: a pretreatment apparatus (1) for pretreating the oily wastewater (2) to produce a pretreated water (3), the pretreatment apparatus (1) comprising at least one of an electrocoagulation apparatus, a flotation apparatus and an absorbing apparatus; and a membrane distillation apparatus (5) for treating the pretreated water (3) to produce a product water (6).
