A multi-room audio visual system comprising one or more AV devices such as a TV, a set-top box associated with each AV device, a router, an Ethernet network connection between the router and STB(s), and a control server which receives and records data from the router that indicates the operating status (on/off) of each AV device, the operating configuration, which may be the TV channel, and the time of each change of status and configuration. Each AV device may have at least two synchronised remote control human interface devices (HIDs). A web server, accessible using an internet browser, may store usage information about each AV device and generate control signals which are polled by one or more STBs and/or HIDs to change the operation of one or more source devices, such as a DVD player, camera, CCTV system or domestic appliance. A content server may operate to receive status and configuration data from the control server and responds by generating information data, such as advertisements, at selected operating conditions of the AV devices.
