The invention provides a commercial transaction system comprising a card reader device 12, a mobile communications device 10 for use by a merchant, a biometric sensor for sensing an image of a biometric parameter of a customer of the merchant, and a server 14 for storing data relating to card details of a customer of said merchant, the card details being ascertained by means of the card reader device. At a first transaction involving the customer, the biometric sensor is arranged to sense the parameter and first data representing the sensed parameter is sent to the server, where it is stored together with the card details of that customer. At a subsequent transaction involving the same customer the data is retrieved from the server by the mobile communications device for comparison by the merchant with the same biometric parameter of the customer. If the match is sufficiently good, the merchant proceeds with the transaction. Alternatively, at a subsequent transaction involving the same customer, the biometric sensor is arranged to sense said parameter and second data representing said sensed parameter is sent to the server. The server compares the first and second data using image-recognition software and then sends to the mobile communications device an indication of the goodness of the match between the first and second data. If the match is sufficiently good, the merchant proceeds with the transaction. Alternatively the system may utilise a camera and photographs to compare and authorise the transaction.
