Hydrocarbon polymers are cross-linked at low temperatures by treatment with an aromatic azide of formula R(N3)x, wherein x is an integer greater than 1 in the presence of a non-protonating Lewis acid. Exemplified polymers are ethylene-propylene copolymer, polypropylene, and styrene-butadiene rubber. Exemplified azides are 4,41-diphenyldiazide, 4,41-diphenylmethane diazide, and 2,21 - dinitro - 4,41-diazodiphenyl. The reaction ingredients are preferably mixed as solutions in inert solvents. Other natural and synthetic polymers are specified. |
