<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and lightweight linear motor. <P>SOLUTION: A linear motor 1 includes: a field magnet 10 having a plurality of magnetic poles 11 that are evenly spaced along a direction of X-axis so as to have alternating polarities; an X-axis armature 20 that is arranged on one side of the field magnet 10 so as to face the field magnet 10 and that has a plurality of X-axis windings 22 for generating a propelling force along the direction of the X-axis; and a Y-axis armature 30 that is arranged on the other side of the field magnet 10 so as to face the field magnet 10 and that has a plurality of Y-axis windings 32 for generating a propelling force along the direction of the Y-axis.
