1,092,478. VTOL aircraft. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT OF CANADA Ltd. June 16, 1965 [Jan. 19, 1965], No. 25486/65. Heading B7G. A vertical take-off and landing aircraft has two gas turbine engines, the exhaust gases of which are ducted to cylindrical plenum chambers 25, 26, each having a slot 27 extending longitudinally along the fuselage, through which the gases are discharged downwardly over the fuselage. The slots are covered by shrouds 36 pivoted to the fuselage at 39 and movable to form passages through which airflow is induced by the slot discharge. The flows are directed downwardly by keel members 34 and by the discharge from a central plenum chamber 42 supplied through a branch pipe from the jet pipe of a forward propulsion turbojet or turbofan engine, a valve being provided at the branch. The shrouds attenuate noise from the slots, which is also reduced by providing corrugations in the surfaces defining the slots. |
