PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which retry frequency or a timeout value in starting processing of HDD can properly be set responding to an operating state of the image forming apparatus.

SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an HDD controller 11, an HDD12 and a microcomputer 3. The microcomputer 3 functions as a determination means to determine an operating state of the image forming apparatus 1, and a setting means to set retry frequency or a timeout value when starting processing of HDD12 based on the determination result, and the microcomputer 3 and the HDD controller 11 functions as a starting means to perform starting processing of the HDD12 based on the set retry frequency or the timeout value.
