<p>A required pre-injection is determined for a pilot injection based on determined form of combustion speed. An offset is determined between the determined required pre-injection and an actual injection quantity injected into a combustion chamber (3) of the internal combustion engine. The pre-injection is changed according to the determined offset. The offset representing adaptation value is recorded in a non-volatile memory during operation of the internal combustion engine.</p>
