Method and apparatus for actuating a starter, which can be controlled by a driver device, for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle. The method for actuating a starter, which can be controlled by a driver device, for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle comprises the following steps: arranging a switch, which can be controlled by the controller, between the driver device and a supply device, which is coupled to a supply voltage, and actuating the starter by means of the controller and the switch in the event of failure of the actuation lines of the driver device and/or at least of part of the driver device.
