The present invention provides a method and system for an Ethernet device to establish an OAM connection. The method comprises: an originating device establishing an OAM connection encapsulates an authentication parameter for authenticating a local device into an OAM protocol data unit and transmits the parameter to a peer device; and the peer device resolves the authentication parameter from the OAM PDU sent by the originating device, authenticates the originating device according to the resolved authentication parameter, and establishes the OAM connection with the originating device authenticated as an expected device. The present invention makes up for the defect of the OAM protocol and improves the security and reliability of the Ethernet.
