PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel thioflavin derivatives.

SOLUTION: This invention relates to amyloid-binding compounds such as 6-methoxy-2-(4-aminophenyl)benzothiazole, 6-methoxy-2-(4'-methylaminophenyl)benzothiazole, 6-methoxy-2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)benzothiazole, 2-(4'-methylaminophenyl)benzothiazole, and 6-methyl-2-(4'-methylaminophenyl)benzothiazole. The compounds are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients having diseases, such as familial Alzheimer's Disease, Down's Syndrome and homozygotes for the apolipoprotein E4 allele, where accumulation of neuritic plaques are prevalent.
