A matrix for the electrolyte of a fuel cell (see Division H1) comprises a blend of alkali-stable asbestos and a minor porportion of water-insolubilized, fibrillated polyvinyl alcohol fibres. The matrix may be made by leaching asbestos fibres with alkali, washing and fibrillating them, separately fibrillating the polyvinyl alcohol fibres, mixing the two and matting and drying the resulting slurry. |
