摘要 Glass or synthetic resin fibres are coated with steel, zinc, copper aluminium, nickel, tin, lead or alloys e.g. Babbit metal including 14.1% antimony by draining them past electrically heated containers or the metal having slots in a graphite coating face.ALSO:Flexible, wear- and abrasion-resistant, coated multifilament yarns or cords e.g. for tyre reinforcement, are made by flowing streams of heat-softenable materials e.g. glass or synthetic resin, from a molten source, alternating the streams into continuous filaments and simultaneously separating them into two p or more lineally moving groups, applying different coating materials to the filaments of different groups so that all filaments in each group are similarly coated, and collecting the group into a unitary assembly. Some filaments of an assembly may be uncoated. Yarns &c., may be twisted and/or intertwisted, formed into ropes or into woven or non-woven (net, scrim, mesh) fabrics in which the intersections of the yarns may be bonded or fused. One or more of the coating materials may be metal e.g. zinc, copper, aluminium, nickel, tin, lead or alloys or combinations thereof (and which may form or be coated or plated with a protective or lubricating film of the metal chloride, phosphate, or sulphide, or graphite or of corrosion resistant metal such as indium) applied by evaporation, plating, chemical reduction or spray, or a synthetic resin e.g. polyamide, epoxy resin. A synthetic resin may be applied to one group and a catalyst therefor e.g. hexamethylene, or to another group, or a resin and excess catalyst may be applied to one group and another resin, curable by the same catalyst, to another group, the or both resins being cured as by heating at any subsequent stage of the yarn or cord, rope or fabric formation. Different component reactant materials e.g. solvent solution of adipyl chloride and an aqueous solution of hexane diamine, may be applied simultaneously or sequentially to one or each group and reacted subsequently to form a synthetic resin which may fix or bond the filaments. If the yarn (or products thereof) contain a metallic component, then it may be heated electro-inductively. Prior to the final collection of the filaments, the different groups may receive different second coatings or finishes e.g. a size including, perhaps, lubricants such as petroleum or vegetable oils, molybdenum disulphide, or materials such as resorcinol formaldehyde latex which render the yarns &c., compatible with a material with which they are combined or the adhesive therefor. One or more single or composite applicators of coating materials, which may also effect the separation of filaments into groups, are positioned (perhaps in succession) at such a distance from the station where the filamentary streams originate that the temperature of the filaments thereat is commensurate with the particular coating methods and materials employed.
