<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool capable of suppressing the chipping and peeling of a coating layer in a cutting blade and improving deposition resistance. <P>SOLUTION: The surface coated member includes a base body 6 having its surface coated with a hard carbon film 7. On the surface of the hard carbon film 7, there exists coarse particles 7b each having a diameter of 1 μm or larger and in which a peak area ratio D/G of a high frequency band (G band) and a low frequency band (D band) obtained by Raman spectroscopic analysis is higher than a peak area ratio D/G in a basis material 7a of the hard carbon film.
