PURPOSE: A rotary tool for friction stir welding is provided to prevent welding failure caused by overheating by drawing in cooling water according to the rise of internal temperature. CONSTITUTION: A rotary tool for friction stir welding comprises a chuck shaft(20), a tool(80), a plurality of cooling channels(30), and a tool holder(210). The chuck shaft is connected to the rotary shaft of a welding machine and transmits torque. The tool generates friction heat through relative motion against base metal. The cooling channels are formed in a circumferential direction in the portion of the chuck shaft contacting the tool in order to cool the friction heat transferred to the tool. The tool holder is coupled to the chuck shaft via a bearing and has a cooling water inflow path(220) and a cooling water discharge path(230) for inflow or discharge of cooling water to the cooling channels.
