<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device and an electronic appliance that can suppress contrast deterioration caused by a phase difference of an alignment film. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device 100 has liquid crystal 50a interposed between a pair of substrates including alignment films. An alignment film 16 provided for one substrate 10 of the pair of substrates includes a first film 161, and a second film 162 which is stacked on the first film 161. A first slow axis of the first film 161 intersects with a second slow axis of the second film 162.
