The device (10a) has a separation unit i.e. compressed air separation unit, provided for separating a material strand (14a) i.e. hot-melt adhesive stick (54a), after an application process using an energy flow separating agent. The separation unit has a separation agent channel for conducting the separating agent formed as a gas mixture to separate the material strand. A separation agent outlet nozzle (38a) is operatively connected with the separation unit. A compressor unit i.e. piston compressor, compresses air that is stored in an air accumulator of the air separation unit. An independent claim is also included for a portable machine tool comprising a heating unit.
